(1) the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment; (2) research and development and the advancement of public education in and the collection and dissemination of information about sustainable waste management practices and the remediation of contaminated land; (3) the provision of open spaces for the recreation and other leisure-time occupation of the public with the object of improving their conditions of life; (4) the restoration, preservation and repair of buildings of historical importance or architectural value and (5) the maintenance and repair of public amenities for the benefit of the inhabitants of the area of benefit but not so as to apply any of the trust funds for the benefit of persons who have made qualifying contributions to the charity under the landfill tax regulations 1996 except when they belong to a class of persons that benefits generally.
