1 to provide relief of poverty to persons suffering from mental illness worldwide, who are in conditions of hardship or distress by:a making grants to enable them to meet housing, food, education, health, clothing and other needs and thereby improve their quality of life.2 to provide or assist in the provision of treatment and care of persons suffering from mental illness of any description or in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness by:a the provision of medical treatment, assessment, advice, aid, care, psychiatric services, counselling, referral, rehabilitation, domiciliary care services, day services, community support services, occupational therapy, advocacy and self-help groups and the establishment of mobile clinics for medical facilities.3 to advance the education of persons recovering from mental illness in africa, particularly those in poor rural and urban areas, those affected by war, civil strife and conflict by:a providing grants for educational materials, teaching aids, transport, supporting lectures, sports and recreation programmes, workshops, training and work/empowerment orientated groups.4 to develop the capacity and skills of the said beneficiaries in such a way that they are better able to identify, and help meet their needs and to participate more fully in society at large. the main activities will be:a grant-aid aimed firstly at equipping the said beneficiaries with skills and competencies which they would not otherwise have to tackle problems of poverty;b secondly, at enabling the said beneficiaries to realise existing skills and to develop their full potential;c thirdly, at promoting increased self confidence, self-respect and dignity of persons suffering or recovering from mental illness;d fourthly, at promoting the ability of the said beneficiaries to take responsibility for identifying and meeting their own and other people's needs; and in consequence of the foregoing at encouraging them and their families to become involved in their community and wider society in a fuller way;e it will also provide funds to engage the said beneficiaries in exchange visits to share their learning an experiences, and to involve their communities so that they gain confidence in their own abilities and their ability to influence decisions that affect them.5 providing or facilitating public education on mental health and the prevention and treatment of mental illness by:a lectures, research, publishing educational materials, hands-on training; providing extra facilities at schools, colleges and universities etc to allow the subject to be studied, telephone advice line/helpline, interactive website and newsletters;b working with the media and advertising agencies to promote positive images of people with mental illness and work towards combating stigma, promoting inclusion and challenging discrimination attached to mental illness
