the objects of the cio are to relieve poverty, to advance education and to promote and protect the good health of girls from siruguppa and its surrounding region in india in accordance with christian principles by:-(a) supporting and developing a home / refuge;(b) rescuing girls from the misery and degradation of devadasi practices (note 1);(c) providing shelter, food, clothing, medical help and educational support for the girls;(d) creating an environment where all girls are made welcome irrespective of their circumstances and encourages each girl to make the most of her capabilities, competences and skills;(e) respecting other religions (raising awareness and understanding of benefits and practices).note 1despite being illegal, devadasi is an indian tradition that’s all too commonplace, particularly in southern india. devadasi girls are married to the goddess elamma, under a hindu ceremony, usually when they are between 6 and 12 years old.when they are older but before they are sexually mature they are introduced to their future, to serve men and earn money for their families. they are prostitutes for life. once married to the goddess, the devadasi girls are forbidden to enter into a conventional marriage.
