Objects:

the objects of the charity (‘the objects’) are: 1. the prevention of the relief of poverty2. the advancement of education3. any other charitable purposesthe aim of this fund will be twofold:1. to alleviate poverty amongst undergraduate nurses and midwives studying at coventry university.nursing in britain is currently experiencing severe shortages, and it is imperative that as many graduate nurses as possible are enabled to join the register in years to come. one-off non-repayable grants of up to £500 will be distributed from the coventry university student nurses’ fund to student nurses (any branch) and midwives from coventry university who are experiencing acute financial hardship. in extreme cases, such hardship may force students to drop out of the course before completion; and even in less extreme cases, financial imperatives may lead to them devoting so much time to second jobs that the quality of their coursework is adversely affected, putting them at risk of failing all or part of the course. grants will be awarded at the discretion of the trustees and will be subject to applicants providing written evidence of acute financial hardship to the satisfaction of the trustees. the fund will be open to applicants at any stage of their course and of any nationality, provided their intention is to work in the nhs for a period of three years after qualification. only in exceptional circumstances would students who have already received a grant from the fund be considered for receipt of a second grant.2. to award an annual prizethe aim of the prize (nurses of the future) will be the encouragement of critical thought among undergraduate student nurses (any branch) and midwives at coventry university. an annual prize of £250 will be awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the judges has produced the essay which best addresses the development of the professions of nursing and/or midwifery in the context of one or more of the following areas: • politics • feminism/gender politics • social policy • professional policy • information technology • media representation/popular culture. the essay would need to be written in an accessible, journalistic style (not academic) which anyone with an interest in nursing could read and understand.the prize will be open to students of any nationality and at any stage of their professional formation, provided they are registered on an undergraduate nursing/midwifery course at the university at the time of submission. entries should be no more than 2000 words in length and may be (but do not have to be) adapted from a previous essay submitted as part of course work. there will be no entry fee, and no limit on how many entries may be submitted per student per year.
