the relief of financial hardship by the provision and maintenance of almshouse accommodation for almspersons appointed in accordance with the following requirements:(1) almspeople shall be poor men of good character of not less than 60 years of age who have resided in the borough of colchester for not less than 5 years next preceding the time of appointment. if on the occasion of a vacancy there is no suitable applicant qualified as aforesaid the trustees may appoint a man otherwise qualified who has resided in the parishes adjoining the said borough for not less than 5 years next preceding the time of appointment. the trustees may permit the wife of an almsperson to reside with him in the said almshouses.(2) fourteen of the almspeople shall be poor women of good character who are widows of former almspeople of the charity and who (except in special cases to be approved by the trustees) are not less than 60 years of age.(3) the almspeople of four of the almshouses shall be poor married couples resident in colchester at the time of appointment. if on the occasion of a vacancy there is no suitable married couple qualified as aforesaid the trustees may appoint a poor married couple resident at the time of appointment in any of the parishes adjoining the said borough.(4) thirteen of the almspeople shall be poor persons of good character of not less than 60 years of age who have resided in the said borough for not less than 5 years next preceding the time of appointment. if on the occasion of a vacancy there is no suitable applicant qualified as aforesaid the trustees may appoint a person otherwise qualified who has resided in the parishes adjoining the said borough for not less than 5 years next preceding the time of appointment.(5) upon the death or setting aside of the appointment of one of a married couple of almspeople the trustees may permit the other of them to remain an almsperson and to continue in occupation of the almshouse theretofore occupied by the married couple or to occupy such other room or rooms as the trustees may allot or the trustees may set aside his or her appointment.
