the object of the cio is: to preserve, conserve and maintain for the public benefit the historic steam tug cervia (national heritage ship number 5) as a heritage asset for the benefit and advancement of public education, in particular by: a) displaying cervia in a prominent position on the riverside at gravesend, where she was based for much of her working life, to provide a visible link to the town’s historic importance as a strategic base for ship towage on the river thames and further afield, and provide a fitting memorial to local mariners who worked in the ship towage industry and those who died on cervia when she sank off gravesend in 1954. b) opening cervia to the public at agreed times in order to educate on the importance of ship towage, engineering and steam technology in this context. c) providing practical and educational opportunities for volunteers and students to learn and practise engineering and other practical skills and to assist in cervia’s ongoing preservation.
