AWARD OF ú15 TO BE MADE TO A GRADUATE UNDER 30 YEARS OF AGE WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF A MERITORIOUS GRADUATES' PAPER PRESENTED AND READ AT HEADQUATERS OR AT A CENTRE OF THE INSTITUTION DURING ANY SESSION. now administered under the general fund subsidiary number 41for the provision of bryan donkin awards in aid of original research in the science or practice of mechanical engineering. now administered under the general fund subsidiary number 41to provide for the delivery of ""thomas lowe gray lectures"" prizes for papers or grants in aid of research in connection with marine engineering. now administered under the general fund subsidiary number 41for the provision of prizes for original communications dealing with invention, design or research in mechanical engineering. promoting the education particularly in mechanical engineering and subjects related thereto, of mechanical engineers or persons intending to become mechanical engineers. THREE PRIZES, EACH CONSISTING OF A SET OF BOOKS OF A MAXIMUM VALUE OF ú10, TO BE PRESENTED BY HE PRESIDENT ANNUALLY TO A GRADUATE OR A STUDENT WHO IS THE AUTHOR OR A MERITORIOUS PAPER READ AT HEADQUARTERS OR AT A CENTRE OF THE INSTITUTION, OR TO GRADUATES OR STUDENTS WHO HAVE MERITORIOUS ORAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO DISCUSSIONS AT MEETINGS AT EITHER THE HEADQUARTERS OR THE CENTRES OF THE INSTITUTION. THESE PRIZES MAY ALSO BE PRESENTED FOR ESSAYS ON INSTITUTIONAL TECHNICAL VISITS. a) the award for each year of a gold medal as a reward for some outstanding achievement in the field of tribology. b) the award for each year of not more than three medals for technical contributions submitted by students or other persons working or researching in the field of tribology. the promotion, advancement or encouragement of the study of and technical education and training research and development in the engineering aspects of transportation (in particular automobile engineering) and related subjects. the prize shall be awarded to the author (or, in the case of joint authorship, to all co-authors in equal shares) of the best original paper calculated to advance or be of benefit to the science of mechanical engineering and published, preferably but not necessarily, in institution of mechanical engineers publications, during the calendar year preceding that in which the award is made. the author, or in the case of joint authorship, at least one author, shall be members of the institution, normally resident in australia. moreover, the paper shall preferably describe or relate to work performed in australia. for such charitable purposes connected with the institution or connected with the advancement of education in mechanical engineering generally as the council may from time to time think fit without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing words (but always within the ambit of legal charity) such purposes may include the establishment and award of scholarships, fellowships, lectureships, competitions, prizes, awards and grants of whatsoever nature and whether made out of the capital or income of the trust fund. the purpose of awarding biennially a gold medal to be called the ""james watt medal"" of such kind and on such terms and conditions as may be prescribed by the council after seeking the co-operation of such mechanical engineering societies in leading industrial countries as the council may decide for some outstanding achievement tending to advance the science of mechanical engineering and of making to the medallist a payment for travelling expenses and if thought fit a reasonable fee for coming to deliver a lecture connected with that science. the objects for which the trust are established are for the public benefit:- (a)to further promote and support research and development in the field of mechanical engineering and its applications and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing words (but always within the ambit of legal charity) such purposes may include the establishment and awards of scholarships fellowships lectureships competitions prizes awards and grants of whatsoever nature and whether made out of capital or income of the trust fund and for such purposes (but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing):- (1)to provide funds for the commencement and promotion of research and development; (11)to commission and provide funds for the carrying out of surveys and the holding of meetings to identify new applications and research needs and to develop research and development strategies;(111)to provide funds for the support of technology transfer activities; and (iv)to do all other things incidental or conducive to the attainment of such objects or any of them (b)in default of such purposes to carry out such other charitable purposes of an educational nature but primarily to further and promote the art and science of mechanical engineering as the trustees shall determine. to promote the development of mechanical engineering. (for details please see paragraph 7 of the royal charter)."
