to promote the welfare by charitable means of all those who are eligible for ordinary membership of the legion and their widows, children and dependants except in so far as concerns the dicipline, privileges and emoluments in money or kind under the regulations in force for the time being of those who are serving members of our navy, army or air force. to promote the welfare of the women an children left by those who have fallen in our service in war and to arrange for and assist them to visit the graves of relatives killed in war. to relieve by charitable means any suffering, hardship or distress caused to the dependants of serving men and women by the absence of those serving men and women. to promote and support schemes for the education of ex-service men, ex-service women and their children.
