for the advancement, encouragement and assistance of learning and education by means of granting sums of money for the following purposes: (a) towards payment of the normal subscription to the library in the case of students or scholars or other such persons of learning and education who in the opinion of the trustees have not the means to pay the normal subscription in full or at all and would otherwise be unable to have access to the library's books and manuscripts. (b) in making grants to students or scholars or other persons as aforesaid for original research work at the library. (c) in the purchase of books, pamphlets, reports, pictures, maps, manuscripts or other documents which would not normally be acquired by the library but which are necessary for the use of such students, scholars or other persons as aforesaid or shall tend to the promotion of learning, scholarship and education. the charitable object for which the library is established is the advancement of education, learning and knowledge by the provision and maintenance in london of a library embracing the arts and humanities for all persons desiring to make a bona fide use thereof for the said charitable object subject only to the payment of such sums (if any) by way of fees and other charges as are necessary to defray the expense of the provision and maintenance thereof.
