1. to advance the education of the people of the united kingdom by promoting knowledge and understanding of the role of the media of mass communication in a democratic society by the provision of scholarships, bursaries and fellowships tenable at universites and colleges for the purpose of promoting and encouraging study of and research into the standards, performance, organisation and economics of the media, the atttitudes of the government, the public and particular sections of the public towards the media and allied topics, and the effect of all or any of the foregoing on the well-being of society throughout the world, and the dissemination of the results of such study and research. 2. to assist in determining those topics of and into which study and research might be most beneficially undertaken by affording opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and opinion between, on the one hand, persons engaged professionally in the media and, on the other, persons in public and political life, the professions, industry, commerce and learning and members of the public generally, through meetings, conferences, the issue of periodical and occasional publications and by all other lawful means. 3. to promote and encourage the study of the media in schools, colleges and educational establishments generally.
