after the payment of the expenses of administration, if any, the yearly income of the foundation shall be applied by the governors in the maintenance of an exhibition, to be called the mark quested exhibition, payable half-yearly in advance, tenable by a graduate of one of the universities of oxford or cambridge, in need and deserving of pecuniary assistance, who shall at the date of the award of the exhibition be not more than 30 years of age, and shall during his tenure thereof be bona fide and diligently engaged either in one of the said universities or elsewhere in some course of useful study or research approved in writing by the vice-chancellor of his university each exhibition shall be awarded for a period of three years which in any particular case may be extended for a further period of not more than two years, if the governors think fit.
