for the advancement of the education of actuaries in fields of study which are outside the normal scope of those generally concerned with life insurance, friendly societies, pension funds, national insurance and associated demographic problems but where the actuary by reason of his statistical and financial training is able to make contributions for the promotion of commerce, industry and for the public benefit and in particular:- (a) to encourage research, the purpoe of which is approved by the council of the institute of actuaries, including the critical study of the literature dealing with the application of scientific methods to the problems of management, including policy making and decision taking and where applicabel to publish the fruits of such research. (b) to make grants for recognised courses of study including attendance of courses of classes, lectures and conferences in this country or overseas.
